Surgery

Orthognathic surgery (corrective jaw surgery) treats and corrects abnormalities of the facial bones, specifically misaligned jaws. These abnormalities can affect long-term oral health and appearance and often cause difficulty with everyday functions such as chewing, talking, sleeping, and breathing. Treating these abnormalities will ensure that the teeth meet and function properly as well as improve the overall appearance of the face.

Much progress has been made in recent years; The SureSmile technology we use allows our doctors to complete the pre-surgical coordination of the jaws and teeth to virtually establish a perfect bite and then re-create those positions in the mouth using robotically bent prescription wires. This type of precision is one of the advancements that has contributed to more predictable outcomes, shorter treatment times and faster recovery periods. Today’s patients are able to return to their normal routines soon after the surgery.

Corrective jaw surgery may not be necessary if orthodontic treatment alone can correct the problem. With the latest advances in orthodontics, this is sometimes the case. After a review of your orthodontic records (x-rays, photos, and impressions for study models) our doctors will determine if orthognathic surgery is the correct treatment option for you. If a surgical correction is indicated, a referral will be given to an oral surgeon for a consultation where you can explore all aspects of the surgical portion of your treatment. Following your consultation our doctors will form a team with you and your oral surgeon to help guide you through the steps to a healthier bite and a beautiful new smile.
